Budaan—meaning to drown—is a theatrical production by Saanjha Sapna Group, Delhi, based on a story by Pooran Hardi. Like Saanjha Sapna’s other plays, this production stands firmly with its social responsibility and does not turn away from it. The story of the play revolves around two children aged around 12–13 years. Because water from a dam is released all at once, their entire village is submerged in a flood. Many people and cattle have drowned in the disaster. The two children now live in a government relief camp with the surviving members of their families. Their lives have changed completely. Secretly, they collect wooden sticks from trees and an old pot to make a makeshift boat, and set out to see their drowned village—where their childhood and memories lie buried. Through the eyes of children, the play examines the effects of modernity and prevailing models of development. It also raises questions about how increasing urbanization exploits rural and tribal resources. With humor and playfulness, the children take us into that submerged village, and when we return, many important questions continue to float in our minds. In Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and several hilly regions, this race for modernity and urbanization has permanently consigned many villages to floods. In other parts of the country, this blind pursuit of modernity has made life even more difficult. Through the children, the play seems to question all of us: where are our fields, our playgrounds, and those trees where we could breathe fresh air and live freely?
